Haute route in the Bernese : From Les Diablerets to Kandersteg

Experience an unforgettable alpine adventure in the heart of the Bernese Alps, where each day offers breathtaking panoramas, exhilarating ascents, and thrilling descents. This haute route takes you from Les Diablerets to Kandersteg, passing by iconic peaks and welcoming mountain huts along the way.

Clothing:

  • Waterproof and breathable jacket (Goretex type) with hood
  • Breathable ski pants (Goretex type)
  • Warm down jacket
  • Fleece
  • Thermal base layers
  • One pair of ski socks
  • Beanie and neck gaiter
  • Cap
  • Light gloves
  • Warm and waterproof gloves

In your backpack:

  • 30/35L comfortable backpack designed for ski touring (ski and ice axe carry system)
  • Sunglasses (Category 4)
  • Ski goggles
  • High-protection sunscreen and lip balm
  • Thermos or water bottle (minimum 1 liter)
  • Survival blanket
  • Headlamp (charged)
  • Waterproof pouch with ID, CAS membership card if applicable, cash, insurance documents, and public transport pass
  • Day’s picnic and snacks (picnic can also be purchased at the refuge)
  • Personal first aid kit
  • For overnight in the hut: sleeping liner, thermal top and spare socks, cleansing wipes (as water is not always available in huts), small toiletry kit

Technical and rescue gear:

  • Skis with touring bindings, skins, ski crampons, and poles with large baskets for off-piste skiing
  • Ski touring boots
  • Avalanche transceiver (3 antennas minimum and marking function), shovel, and probe
  • Harness, crampons (with anti-snow plates), and ice axe

Your outing

Day 1 :

  • Elevation gain: +790m

Your adventure begins at the Col du Pillon, where we will take the Glacier 3000 cable car to access the Glacier des Diablerets. A first descent to the Col du Sanetsch will serve as a warm-up before the beautiful ascent to the Arpelistock. A descent to the north will lead you to the charming Geltenhütte.

Day 2 :

  • Elevation gain: +1,250m

Today’s traverse starts with the ascent of the Geltenhorn, followed by a descent to the Col du Brotset. A short climb leads to a descent on the Valais side, ending at the Cabane des Audannes.

Day 3 :

  • Elevation gain: +1,100m

The third day features the ascent of the Wildhorn, the highlight of this Haute Route. From the summit, a long sunny descent takes you into the wild Rawyl valley. The day ends at the Wildstrubelhütte, known for its warm hospitality.

Day 4 :

  • Elevation gain: +750m

Begin the day by crossing the Plaine Morte Glacier, offering a moment of respite before the ascent of the Wildstrubel and its three peaks. From the summit, a panoramic view stretches from the Jura to the southern crest of the Alps. A fabulous descent brings you to the Lämmerenhütte.

Day 5 :

  • Elevation gain: +350m

On the final day, a short morning ascent leads to the summit of the Rote Totz, followed by a long and beautiful descent to Kandersteg, at the heart of the peaceful rural valleys of the Bernese Oberland.
