Silvretta Haute Route: an adventure around the Piz Buin

Immerse yourself in the heart of the Silvretta, a paradise for ski touring enthusiasts! Situated on the border between Switzerland and Austria, this region offers an exceptional setting for an unforgettable week of adventure.

Enjoy breathtaking landscapes and varied itineraries, far from the crowds. The highlight of your trip will be the ascent of the majestic Piz Buin, which peaks at 3312 meters.

Clothing:

  • Waterproof and breathable jacket (Goretex type) with hood
  • Breathable ski pants (Goretex type)
  • Warm down jacket

In your backpack:

  • 30/35L comfortable backpack designed for ski touring (ski and ice axe carry system)
  • Sunglasses (Category 4)
  • Ski goggles
  • High-protection sunscreen and lip balm
  • Thermos or water bottle (minimum 1 liter)
  • Survival blanket
  • Headlamp (charged)
  • Waterproof pouch with ID, CAS membership card if applicable, cash, insurance documents, and public transport pass
  • Day’s picnic and snacks (picnic can also be purchased at the refuge)
  • Personal first aid kit
  • For overnight in the hut: sleeping liner, thermal top and spare socks, cleansing wipes (as water is not always available in huts), small toiletry kit

Technical and rescue gear:

  • Skis with touring bindings, skins, ski crampons, and poles with large baskets for off-piste skiing
  • Ski touring boots
  • Avalanche transceiver (3 antennas minimum and marking function), shovel, and probe
  • Harness, crampons (with anti-snow plates), and ice axe

Your outing

Day 1 :

  • Ascent duration: approx. 3h

We start by driving to the Engadine, reaching the charming village of Guarda. From there, we ascend through the picturesque Tuoi Valley to reach the Chamanna Tuoi Hut, located at 2,250m.

Day 2 :

  • Ascent duration: approx. 4h

We climb through the steep passages of the Vadret Tuoi, heading toward the Jamjoch Pass at 3,078m. From there, we can summit Hinterer Jamspitze, and if conditions allow, Vorderer Jamspitze at 3,176m. The descent via the Jamtalferner Glacier takes us to the Jamtal Hut, at 2,165m.

Day 3 :

  • Ascent duration: approx. 4h

Among the many options around the Jamtal Hut, we will choose to ascend Piz Faschalba, which reaches 3,048m. This peak offers stunning views of the majestic Fluchthorn and a beautiful descent.

Day 4 :

  • Ascent duration: approx. 4h

We move to the Wiesbadener Hütte. Several options are available for this day, including the ascent of Dreiländer Spitze at 3,197m or Ochsenkopf at 3,057m via the Tyrol Pass. We will descend to the Wiesbadener Hütte, located at 2,443m.

Day 5 :

  • Ascent duration: approx. 4h

The highlight of the week will be the ascent of the famous Piz Buin, the iconic peak of the Silvretta, standing at 3,312m. The ascent will take us via the wild Ochsentaler Glacier. Depending on conditions, the descent will either be directly from Fuorcla Buin to Ebene Croncel or via Fuorcla dal Cunfin and Mittagsplatten to Val Tuoi. The trip concludes with a descent to the village of Guarda, before heading back home.
